Job Posting: GIS and Database Manager

The GIS and Database manager will be a part of American Forests (AF) Operations team, reporting directly to the Director of Conservation Technology. The manager will provide hands-on leadership on a broad range of data and technology at AF, including data and information development through complex spatial analysis; database creation and management; and data delivery through beautiful maps and visualizations.

This role provides a great opportunity for an early career professional to utilize multiple technology skills and explore opportunities to specialize at a rapidly growing mission driven non-profit. The ideal candidate will have education and work experience with expertise in geographic information systems, databases, and object-oriented programming.


Geospatial analysis and mapping (60%)

This role will work independently on high visibility spatial projects across the country that help to bring tree equity to cities across the country and deliver climate-smart reforestation to our treasured forests and natural lands. GIS and mapping needs will include, but not be limited to the following:

  • Research, collect, and manage spatial data on AF’s GIS Server on the AWS cloud.
  • Build static and dynamic web maps using the ArcGIS software suite and ArcGIS Online.
  • Conduct spatial data analysis using ArcGIS modelbuilder, python, and R.
  • Build simple applications to visualize AF and partner data that provide new insights.

Database development and management (20%)

Work with staff across the organization to clean, organize and manage our data, including:

  • Clean, define, and manage all field information in American Forests’ internal customer Relationship management (CRM) database.
  • Develop standard operation procedures for entering and extracting development pipeline information from the CRM.
  • Develop dashboards and reports that provide business intelligence to key staff on donor progress.
  • Work with program staff, AF’s tech consultant, and others to manage and expand American Forests Champion Trees database.
  • Work with program staff and the CIO to build a new project history database that catalogs all American Forests projects going back to 1990.

IT Support (20%)

Provide support to CIO and Director of Conservation Technology on technology infrastructure management and tasks, including:

  • Create and maintain training materials and SOPs for AF technology solutions (including databases).
  • Provide in-house tech support and troubleshooting as needed for AF staff.
  • Support CIO in management of the AWS cloud that houses AF’s GIS infrastructure (and more).


  • Bachelor’s degree in geography, computer science, engineering or a related field
  • 2-4 years of related working experience- advanced degree can substitute for experience
  • Proficiency with the ArcGIS suite of software and tools, including desktop GIS (ArcGIS Pro and ArcMap), ArcGIS Server, and ArcGIS Online
  • Programming experience in python, R, SQL, and VB
  • Proficiency with Excel
  • Experience with Javascript libraries, like React and Leaflet a plus
  • Familiarity with alternative GIS tools, like QGIS, GRASS, and MapBox a plus
  • An interest in forestry, climate change, and equity
  • Experience working with CRMs (especially Neon) is a plus
  • Critical thinking, problem solving and analytical skills
  • Comfort interacting with clients and partners
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

Working Conditions

The majority of work is performed in a general office environment, with occasional opportunities to travel. American Forests is located in downtown Washington, D.C., within walking distance of Metro stations on all lines, multiple bus lines, and Capital Bikeshare.
