“Growing up on the Oregon Coast, I've always liked taking trips east of the Cascades to the much drier pine forests. The striking difference between the two landscapes was always fascinating to see, so I was excited to have the opportunity to finally work in these dry forests. However, seeing wildfires both sides of the Cascades increase in size, severity, and frequency in recent years, I am most excited to be a part of American Forests and to help in restoring our forests, making them more resilient to future fires and better adapted to a changing climate.”

Joe Schafer leads the American Forests reforestation crew, supporting the post-fire restoration work on the Fremont-Winema National Forest in Oregon. He brings several years of reforestation experience to American Forests. Born and raised in Western Oregon, Schafer attended Oregon State University for a BS in Forestry with a focus on forest restoration and fire.
