Job Posting: Director of Human Resources
Director of Human Resources is the guardian and champion of American Forests’ culture and will be responsible for and lead all aspects of human resources for AF including developing strategies to ensure that HR initiatives and programs such as recruitment, onboarding, team-building and recognition, professional development, performance management, DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility) implementation, and employee benefits along with other organization initiatives that echo and embed the organization’s culture, values, and purpose into our daily operations. The Director of Human Resources will also draft policies and develop metrics that track employee engagement and productivity. This position will report to the Chief Operations Officer.
REQUISITE EDUCATION OR CERTIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field required and a minimum of three years of human resource management experience preferred. Current HR certification, e.g., SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP highly desired.
- Demonstrated experience as advisor across every level in an organization, including executive and senior leadership team.
- Demonstrated leadership of a talent agenda who contributed to a culture creativity, entrepreneurship and excellence.
- Demonstrated experience in strategic HR program development, business planning & operational management.
- Demonstrated project management, problem-solving, collaboration and influencing skills.
- Demonstrated thorough knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations.
- Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal and coaching, negotiation, conflict resolution, organizational skills, and attention to detail are required. Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality. Prior not-for-profit management experience preferred.
- To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge and demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. Human Capital Management software experience, especially with Isloved. Experience with association management software and its integration with other database is highly desired.

SPECIFIC DUTIES include the following:
1) Manage American Forests Professional Development and Performance Review Processes. (40%)
- Promote a creative and inspired work environment by sustaining current policy of wellness and balance, respect, equity, and efficiency.
- Manage AF’s yearly performance management program, offering training content focused on successful performance management principles, goal-setting and accountability, advising supervisors in coaching staff and providing effective feedback; and focus on addressing and resolving performance and/or behavior issues fairly, consistently and expeditiously.
- Create learning and development programs and initiatives that provide internal & external training; identify and recommend areas for staff development.
- Manage periodic analysis of trends in compensation and benefits; research and propose competitive base and enviable benefits package to ensure the organization attracts and retains top talent; oversee benefit-related broker and vendor relationships.
- Work with staff to periodically review job descriptions to ensure they are up to date and reflect the current duties.
- Work with COO to review and update current HR related policies and procedures to ensure they are up to date and reflect the current thoughts. Regularly communicate and update staff on policies and procedures.
- Maintain knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law.
- Manage HR related budgets including coding of HR expense and shepherding them through the approval process.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
2) Manage American Forests’ Hiring, Onboarding and Existing process for internal staff (30%)
- Manage the process of onboarding new American Forests employees making sure they feel welcome and knowledgeable about American Forests and its policies. This includes setting up times for the new employees to meet with other departments and project leads.
- Manage the job posting and hiring process for American Forests. Work with teams to ensure job descriptions are posted in a timely manner and a variety of places. Oversee the resume collection process to help filter the best candidates for supervisors to review and then manage the interview process.
- Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; review policies and practices to maintain compliance.
- Provide support and guidance to executive, senior leadership team, and other staff when complex, specialized, and sensitive questions and issues arise; may be required to administer and execute routine tasks in delicate circumstances such as providing reasonable accommodations, investigating allegations of wrongdoing, and terminations.
3) Manage American Forests DEIA efforts (30%)
- Partner with the leadership team to understand the organization’s human resources and talent strategy particularly as it relates to diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts; create strategies to ensure that AF has the breadth of talent necessary to achieve its growth plans by implementing effective recruiting strategies and processes that are consistent, streamlined, and targeted toward attracting a competitive, diverse talent pool; educate teams on recruitment and inclusion strategies; support the effective vetting of candidates, including an assessment of cultural fit.
- Lead internal DEIA committee to review existing policies and process as well as recommend new ones that ensure American Forests processes are thoughtful and forward thing.
The ideal candidate will be an inspirational leader who is approachable, relatable and an experienced Human Resources and Administrative leader with solid career progression across multiple HR roles. Experience with leading transformational change and building an engaged, diverse and inclusive culture, organizational design, workforce planning, employee relations and training. A strategic and tactical leader who will ”roll up their sleeves” and drive positive results.
SALARY: Salary is commensurate with experience.
