New greenhouse seeds hope for Montana’s restoration effort
“There’s clearly a need for more seedlings and plants for reforestation because of bigger and
bigger severe fires. It’s great to get help to put up a new greenhouse that gives us added capacity
to meet that need.”
— Matt Arno, bureau chief, the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation’s Forestry
Assistance Bureau

MONUMENTAL LEGISLATION

Restoring a future for our forests through the REPLANT Act
“The REPLANT Act is not only making this work possible, but it’s also allowing American
Forests to create unique partnerships that can address the overwhelming need to
protect our forests both today and in the future. We can’t do it alone.”
— Brian Kittler, chief program officer for Resilient Forests, American Forests

American Forests found a shortage of MGR Sugar Pine trees in California's forests after the Caldor Fire. These trees are crucial for reforestation due to their resistance to a fatal disease. We aimed to identify and sample new MGR trees to ensure a future seed source for the region. Over 200 candidate trees were surveyed, and 151 needle samples were collected for genetic testing. The samples were delivered to laboratories for processing and documentation. December of 2021, 151 needle samples were delivered to the USFS. They will be processed, documented and sent to one of 2 laboratories in the region capable of carrying out the genetic testing. CREATOR Luis Vidal / American Forests

Q&A: What nurseries need to reforest a city
“My hope is that we can help increase the capacity of tree nurseries so they can grow and
expand the number of trees available to the communities that need them most.”
— Becky Schwartz, director of urban forestry innovation, American Forests
