  • A single tree can absorb 10 pounds of air pollutants per year.
  • Forests supply more than 50 percent of freshwater flow in the lower 48 states, and approximately 180 million people depend on forests for their drinking water.
Forests provide habitat for wildlife.
  • Studies suggest that if forest and habitat loss continue at current trends, one million species will become endangered in the next 50 years.
Forests cool our plant by removing CO2 and other harmful greenhouse gases, which helps fight climate change.
  • Carbon sequestration by plants offset 15 percent of total U.S. carbon dioxide emissions from the transportation and energy sectors.
  • An acre of forest can consume the amount of carbon dioxide created by driving a car 26,000 miles, about twice the annual mileage for an average driver.
Forests in urban areas provide all of the benefits above, but also financial and well-being benefits to urbanites.
  • Well-placed trees around your home can reduce annual air conditioning costs by 30 percent.
  • 100 million mature trees growing around residences in the U.S. can save about $2 billion annually in reduced energy costs.
  • Studies show that there is a correlation between trees in urban areas and improved cognitive function, reduced crime, more active lifestyles and, thus, improving health) and an increased sense of accomplishment to the community.

Your commitment, and that of others like you, allows us to restore hundreds of thousands of acres of forest destroyed by wildfire and other natural disasters, development, insects, disease and human abuses. It also enables us to work with communities to better care for the forests and trees in our nation’s cities and towns and to educated thousands of people each year about the importance of forests and trees.

With your membership you will receive:

  • A one-year subscription to our award-winning magazine, American Forests, filled with stunning photographs and informative articles highlighting our nation’s forests and trees and the work we are doing to protect them.
  • Invitations to participate in field trips and volunteer service days, allowing you to become personally involved in the work of American Forests.
  • Discounts and special offers from our partners.

Most importantly, you’ll be supporting efforts to restore and protect some of the most important forest ecosystems in the nation, which slows global climate change and contributes to cleaner air, cleaner water, increased wildlife habitat and more beautiful cities, towns and rural landscapes.
