American Forests at Bicycle for a Day
On September 20th AMERICAN FORESTS was at Manhattan’s South Street Seaport for a day of sun, fun, and live music organized by actor Matthew Modine and his new community initiative, Bicycle for a Day (BFAD).
BFAD is committed to the preservation of the environment. Its mission is, “to inspire and inform individuals about simple everyday actions that, done collectively, can make a real difference in the fight against global warming.”
Founder Matthew Modine invited New Yorkers to leave their cars at home and ride a bike, skate, or put on some sneakers and jog to the inaugural event held at the South Street Seaport.
Olympian Sharon Seagrave led those who preferred to walk or skate the bike route during the day. Musicians Lukas Haas and Ben Jelen entertained the crowd, with an equally spirited performance from the Stumblebum Brass Band. A number of other celebrities, from TV stars to musicians, also attended to show their support.
Prize drawings on the day included a Trek bike, a Puma bike, 6 pairs of shoes from MBT (what is MBT?), 1 pair of Mets Tickets donated by Snapple, and a Segway, among others. Funds raised were used to support the two non-profit groups sponsored by BFAD; AMERICAN FORESTS and the Waterkeeper® Alliance.
Waterkeeper® Alliance founder, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., made a special appearance to address the crowd with AMERICAN FORESTS’ Sheri Shannon and Shawn Berriman also speaking from the stage
During the day, an estimated 10,000 people passed through the South Street Seaport and heard the messages of conservationism and carbon footprint reduction. Several hundred people visited the AMERICAN FORESTS’ booth with many making donations to help plant trees.
AMERICAN FORESTS wishes to thank the following people who gave so generously to our Global ReLeaf tree planting program – through their donations, more than 145 trees were planted in one or more ecosystem restoration projects: |
