It takes a 3-day backcountry hike to view this stalwart national champion Whitebark pine (pinus albicaulis). Located in the Sawtooth Natural Resource Area in Idaho, this species is key for survival for upper subalpine environment. Occurring naturally at high-elevation were most trees can not grow, it provides critical habitat and food for the grizzly bear and Clark’s nutcrackers. The national champion stands 69 feet tall with a 47-foot crown spread and a circumference of 27 feet for a point total of 412.
