Today's forests are not as fire-resistant as they once were. Decades of fire suppression have led to a buildup of fuels. Climate change has brought drought and infestation by insects and disease, killing off millions of trees and providing even more fuel for fires. And as development encroaches further on our nation's forests, it becomes ever more expensive and dangerous to protect homes and infrastructure from intense wildfires. By restoring burned forests to healthy ecosystems, and promoting healthy management of forests and fires, we can try to undo the damage, and prevent future fires that can destroy so much of what we have worked to protect.
