Changing climate patterns are exacerbating the most dangerous threats to forests, and even creating new ones. Already we have seen ecological disturbances on a global scale; habitats disappearing, intense droughts, devastating wildfires, and the ranges of entire species shifting as the areas they have occupied for centuries become unable to support them. Because forests sequester and store carbon - an element now in great excess in our atmosphere - they are closely linked to climate change. If left to suffer its effects, they release more carbon into the air, making a bad situation even worse. But if protected and enhanced, forests could be our greatest allies in protecting the planet from the threat of climate change.
