In 2001 local chapters of the National Wild Turkey Federation planted 6,000 Sargent crabapple trees with shelters through Operation Appleseed. This program focuses on the establishment of crabapple orchards for fall and winter food sources for turkeys and other wildlife. This program is important in the Northeast as the conversion of small farms to woodlands has caused a reduction in this type of habitat. Trees were planted in Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and West Virginia. Other partners for this project included Asplundh and Central Vermont Public Service.
This project was supported by our corporate partner, the Alcoa Foundation.
