Name of Project: Burroughs Elementary School Planting

Location: Tulsa, OK

Number of Trees: 35

Tulsa’s Up With Trees is a nonprofit urban forestry group that works to expand urban canopy and greenspace. For more than 30 years, Up With Trees has enhanced Tulsa one tree at a time. Up With Trees is partnering with American Forests to plant 35 medium to large shade trees on the property surrounding one of Tulsa’s public schools, Burroughs Elementary. Currently, Burroughs Elementary has a canopy coverage of less than five percent. This planting will enhance shade to protect the children during outdoor playtime, as well as teach the students about the importance of trees to the environment and the community. Students will participate in planting and developing the greenspace for the school and community. The new shade cover will reduce utility costs, increase tree species diversity and reduce the heat island in the parking lots.

This project was supported by our corporate partner, the Alcoa Foundation.
