Several small sites were planted by the New Jersey Forest Service in the spring of 2000 while larger projects were pending. Two sites in Bass River State Forest were planted. The first site was harvested in 1996 and then immediately planted, but due to extreme drought there was high mortality. The planting filled in the areas of high mortality. At the second Bass River site, Atlantic White-cedar trees were planted in an area damaged by fire. Finally, a third planting took place in Belleplain State Forest. This planting was performed to introduce new growing stock while conducting a workshop to benefit New Jersey school teachers. The workshop included a fire tower tour, fire ecology of the New Jersey pinelands, tree identification and tree planting.
This project was supported by our corporate partner, the Alcoa Foundation.
