Grand Forks Landfill

Year Planted: 1994
Trees Planted: 2,600
Location: North Dakota

North Dakota's Greater Grand Forks Arbor Day Committee, consisting of a large variety of partners, planted trees around the perimeter of a landfill. 2,600 green ash, cottonwood, Russian olive, Centennial cotoneaster, skunkbush sumac, buffaloberry and Siberian elm were planted on 10 acres. The trees were planted mostly by fourth grade students from local schools with the goal of teaching students about ecology and stewardship. The trees were covered with tree shelters to protect them from rabbits. This project will create a visual barrier for the landfill and wildlife habitat.
