In 2002, the Kraft Springs fire burned 65,551 acres of the Custer National Forest. With the help of American Forests the Custer National Forest will plant over 400,000 seedlings to speed up the recovery of the forested habitat that would otherwise take many decades. This planting will help with elk habitat, mule deer habitat, whitetail deer habitat, goshawk habitat, forestland cover, watershed health, fire rehabilitation and carbon sequestration.
