The Medicine & Moonshine watersheds, a key elk winter range, were severely burned in wildfires during 2000. Once-dominate ponderosa pine has not returned and only a portion of the area is replanted. With American Forests' help, Bitterroot National Forest will replant ponderosa pine. With its resurgence, fire will again play a more natural role in maintaining forested cover for watershed protection, maintenance of wildlife habitat, and recreation.
