In 2001 local chapters of the National Wild Turkey Federation planted 37,500 trees through Operation Heartland. This program seeks to restore bottomland hardwoods, riparian corridors and farm woodlots in the heartland of the United States. Historically, woodland loss has occurred in this region due to agricultural expansion. Trees were planted in Arkansas, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio and Missouri. The trees planted included Northern red oak, white oak, pin oak, sycamore, persimmon and Eastern cottonwood. Additional support for this project was provided by American Electric Power and Marathon Oil.
This project was supported by our corporate partner, the Alcoa Foundation.
