This planting is part of the recovery management plan for the Kirtland's warbler in the Hiawatha National Forest. This endangered bird species only breeds in jack pine stands of specific age usually around 6-16 years greater than 80 acres, and along INSERT with scattered small openings. In this project, 101,000 jack pines will be planted on 127 acres of land. This type of dense habitat is tremendously important for the survival of the Kirtland's warbler.
