Nanticoke River Wildlife Management Area

Year Planted: 1998
Trees Planted: 1,400
Location: Maryland

The Maryland DNR Forest Service planted 1,400 bare-root seedlings on 4 acres along the Nanticoke River between Rewastico and Quantico Creek. Prior to acquisition by Maryland, this land had been actively farmed and subjected to timber harvesting at various times over the last century. This planting will increase the Riparian Forest Buffer and will enhance and increase habitat for upland game and non-game birds, mammals and waterfowl through increased mast/fruit production, creation of a widened riparian travel corridor and winter cover. Additional benefits include increased water quality, improved public outdoor recreation, and increased natural resource education opportunities. Additional assistance for this project came from the Maryland State Park Service and the Maryland Conservation Corps.
