Vigil & Abeyta Mesa Reforestation

Year Planted: 2009
Trees Planted: 50,100
Location: Colorado

In this project the Bureau of Land Management reestablished ponderosa pine on the Vigil and Abeyta Mesas in the Southwest corner of Colorado. The phases of this project included mastication of diseased trees in the area, implementing prescribed burns, and then the planting of native ponderosa pines. This project improved wildlife habitat for animals such as the endangered Mexican Spotted Owl as well as mule deer, elk, black bear, bats, and others. Another benefit provided by the planting of these trees was the improvement of water quality in the watershed.
