In 2000 local chapters of the National Wild Turkey Federation planted 6,500 sawtooth oaks with shelters through Operation Oak. The goal of this program is to re-establish small oak groves to replace the ones lost through the conversion of southeastern forests to pine plantations. Trees were planted in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. Champion also supported this project.
