Goals

• Reforest areas in 10 villages in northern Ghana
• Increase food security by planting fruit and nut trees--mango, cashew, citrus, shea, and moringa
• Create alternative livelihoods for rural communities

Notable Highlights

With sponsorship from Origins, American Forests will work in conjunction with Tree Aid and a number of local Ghanaian groups to plant trees in an area vulnerable to drought and floods, and has become further complicated by climate change.

Trees are a valuable source of income for people in this area. This project encourages harvesting non-timber forest products (NTFPs),  including shea butter, organic mangoes, forest honey, and crafts, which can all be produced without cutting down the trees.

Prior to planting the trees, participants in the project will receive extensive training to enhance their finance and management skills, as they enter into the world of business. People will also be educated about tree growing and maintenance, tree grafting, soil and water management, and bushfire prevention.
