Notable Highlights
American Forests is partnering with the USDA Forest Service to reforest areas within the Deschutes National Forest that were damaged in a forest fire. The reestablishment of upland forest will produce shade for intermittent streams, increase canopy cover and forage area for wildlife, and reduce erosion which ultimately leads to sedimentation of the Metolius arm of Lake Billy Chinook, home to the endangered bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus).
The bull trout, a cold water fish native to the northwestern US, has been adversely affected by habitat degradation and fragmentation, blockage of migratory corridors, poor water quality, the effects of climate change, and competition between non-native species such as brown, lake, and brook trout. Human activities such as development, logging, and agriculture have also largely contributed to the decline of the bull trout.
