Year Planted: 2010 Trees Planted: 73,319 Location: Nicaragua
The purpose of this project is to plant a total of 73,319 hardwood, fruit and mixed-use trees during a 15-month period (April 2010 to June 2011). The reforestation activities will occur in 28 communities in the Autonomous Region of the South Atlantic (spanish acronym RAAS), 15 in the municipality of Bluefields, seven in the municipality of Kukra Hill, and six in the Wapi zone, municipalities of El Rama and El Tortuguero. The primary purpose of this project is to improve the quality of life of 272 rural families that inhabit the zone. This will be achieved through the reforestation of degraded areas within the communities, especially along the riparian zone of rivers and their tributaries, assistance in conservation of natural resources and meeting the basic needs of residents through the establishment of fruit trees that will serve subsistence and marketing purposes.
This project was supported by our corporate partner, the Alcoa Foundation.
