The Hiawatha National Forest will hand-plant 15,000 long lived conifers within 500 feet of streams including West Branch Waiska River at the mouth and above White Creek. The planting will help counter the effect of historic logging, help return the zone to pre-settlement vegetation and enhance cold-water fisheries habitat.
