A blow-down in 1999 damaged the Superior National Forest so severely that it was classified as non-forest. To restore watershed conditions, the area had to be reforested. With the support of American Forests, the Topaz Salvage project hand-planted 21 acres of site-prepped land with 13,740 seedlings.
