In 2004 Fr. Ben Erkens of the Social Action Center launched an ambitious reforestation project of the neglected Agbannawag watershed of Tabuk in the Kalinga Province of Philippines. In 2006 through the support of American Forests Global ReLeaf, 60 families from the local community planted 50,000 native trees in the restoration and renewal of Agbannawag watershed and the surrounding former forest-areas. Benefits of the project include the alleviation of poverty in the local community and potable water. Support for this project was also provided by the Philippines Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
This project was supported by our corporate partner, the Alcoa Foundation.
