The 16,683 acre St. Sebastian River State Buffer Preserve is managed by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for conservation and preservation of native ecosystems. The preserve encourages low-impact outdoor recreation such as hiking, camping and swimming. The area is home to 23 distinct and rare natural plant communities, 28 protected animal species and 26 protected plant species. The preserve also safeguards one-third of the St. Sebastian River watershed. This is the final stage of a three-year project, concluding with the planting of 66,500 longleaf seedlings.
