Year Planted: 2001 Trees Planted: 11,400 Location: California
This demonstration project planted 12,200 trees to restore an old hydraulic mining site from the gold rush era of the 1860s. Although the area is slowly healing itself, the process would take more than 100 years by natural regeneration alone. Biosolids from area wastewater treatment plants will be used to improve the soil and a technique called Abootstrapping will place productive topsoil with each seedling to reintroduce soil microbe populations. The new trees will stabilize banks, improve water quality and fish habitat, and greatly improve aesthetics on this highly visible site.
