Township of Orange Farm

Year Planted: 1997
Trees Planted: 6,300
Location: South Africa

Trees for Africa, the only national greening group in South Africa, partnered with American Forests to plant over 6,000 trees in the Township of Orange Farm. TFA works with community groups to help bring trees into barren communities and foster community ownership of the tree planting projects. In order for a planting to occur in a community, the community must submit a proposal covering both the planting and ongoing care of the trees to TFA, who then secure funding and support for the project. This planting was completed by community members and with education and support from TFA, they will continue to care for the trees, ensuring their survival. The trees will help to prevent erosion, clean the air, and improve water quality as well as beautify the community.

This project was supported by our corporate partner, the Alcoa Foundation.
