Milan Kapusta Memorial Forest

Year Planted: 1996
Trees Planted: 16,000
Location: Slovakia

Dr. Milan Kapusta, leader of the environmental movement in Slovakia and founder of Global ReLeaf Slovakia, died tragically in an accident at Yellowstone National Park on September 17, 1995. A memorial forest was planted in his name on a ridge overlooking his hometown of Banska Stiavnica, cradle of Slovakia's forestry tradition and part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. On April 19, 1996 Global ReLeaf Slovakia officially began the project by planting 1,000 trees, with the participation of guests and volunteers from across the country. The event received significant media coverage and promised to improve the landscape around Banska Stiavnica, with an additional plantings scheduled to occur in the summer and fall.

This project was supported by our corporate partner, the Alcoa Foundation.
