Year Planted: 1995 Trees Planted: 7,000 Location: Bulgaria
This project implemented afforestations with suitable tree and shrub species in the Eastern Rhodopes, which are a part of a region in Bulgaria susceptible to future changes of climate. This is a pilot project to be used for determining the adaptability and resistance of the tree and shrub species to aggravated climatic conditions in Bulgaria. The analysis of the results to be obtained is to be used in updating existing standards and the governmental policy for sustainable development of the forestry sector. The implementation of the project is Bulgaria's contribution to discharging its duties under the Framework Convention on Climate Change. Effects also include soil erosion control, regulation of water balance of the watershed, improvement of water quality, creation of new forest vegetation, production of biomass and CO2 mitigation.
This project was supported by our corporate partner, the Alcoa Foundation.
