The Iowa DNR and American Forests again combined efforts to plant an additional 59 acre parcel of the 444 acre farm in the Stephens State Forest near Des Moines, Iowa. The farm was donated to Iowa in 1986 with the condition that trees would be planted by 1996. The 59 acres were planted with native hardwoods. In order to try and improve the survival of the black walnut seedlings, 5,000 of the 9,000 black walnut seedlings planted had an autumn olive seedling planted close by. This arrangemented was intended to improve nutriet availability (nitrogen) for the black walnut and to hide the walnut seedlings from deer.
This project was supported by our corporate partner, the Alcoa Foundation.
