American Forests is proud to have partnered with the Living Memorial Tree Foundation for this urban tree planting project. On October 27, 2003, the Living Memorial Tree Foundation, established under the patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert of Monaco and the New York City Parks & Recreation Department, dedicated the Living Memorial Tree Grove. This grove was established near New York’s City Hall in remembrance of the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, and includes five surviving trees that were recovered from Ground Zero.
This project planted 2,896 trees in a 7-acre coastal maritime forest. An additional 16 Freedom Trees were planted at fire stations, police precincts, and Port Authority facilities around the city. These trees will serve as a living reminder of the people who sacrificed their lives on September 11th, 2001.
This project was supported by our corporate partner, the Alcoa Foundation.
