In 2001 local chapters of the National Wild Turkey Federation planted 35,000 trees through Operation SOS (Set Out Seedlings). The goal of this program is to plant winter food sources for wild turkeys and other wildlife. Trees were planted in Michigan and Minnesota, including Northern red oak, Northern hackberry, highbush cranberry, green ash and Washington hawthorne.
