Huron-Manistee National Forest - Chittendon

Year Planted: 1996
Trees Planted: 13,500
Location: Michigan

The Chittenden Educational Center is located on the site of the former Chittenden Nursery, Huron-Manistee National Forest, near Wellston, Michigan. On 25 acres of abandoned seedbeds, the Forest Service planted 13,500 native tree seedlings. Over 200 students also participated in the planting of the trees. For a period of time 5,000 students ranging from kindergarten to 12th grade visited the site annually. Some of the projects the students were involved with included tree identification, the measuring of trees and comparisons of growth rates between various species. Other community groups, such as the girl scouts, boy scouts and youth camps have also visited the site.

This project was supported by our corporate partner, the Alcoa Foundation.
