Project Name: Kentucky American Chestnut Mine Site Reclamation
Location: Montgomery Creek, KY
Number of Trees: 7,541
American Forests is working with The American Chestnut Foundation, Coal Country Beeworks and James River Coal, Inc., to provide 7,541 seedlings to a bee yard in Montgomery Creek, KY. In 2011, the bee yard was established as part of an Arbor Day celebration. This project will plant forest-based habitat for pollinators on a 15-acre mining site. Planting on land owned by surface mine companies will help increase the habitat for pollinators that have been declining in the United States. The planting will include a number of tree species: flowering dogwood, persimmon, eastern redbud, red mulberry and yellow poplar.
This project was supported by our corporate partner, the Alcoa Foundation.
