Goals of the tree planting actions were to increase public ecological awareness, children's ecological education, and increased scenic value for urban landscapes. The planting in the spring was devoted to the European Nature Conservation Year (ENCY-1995), and included the participation of the Ukrainian Vice Prime-Minister Ivan Khuras, the Minister of Environmental Protection and Nuclear Safety Yuryi Kostenko, National EcoCentre of Ukraine volunteers, teachers and pupils from the Ukrainian Ecological Centre for Children and Youth, and schoolchildren from neighboring schools. The planting on the banks of the Desenka river, carried out by local schoolchildren, was devoted to Earth Day 1995. Further care and maintenance of the trees was undertaken by the organization 'Green World,' while the participation of Global ReLeaf was marked by distribution of materials and the erection of a Global ReLeaf sign at the Heritage Park in Kyiv.
This project was supported by our corporate partner, the Alcoa Foundation.
