Highland Valley Copper #1- British Columbia

Year Planted: 1999
Trees Planted: 68,485
Location: Canada

Highland Valley is home to Canada's largest open copper mining operation. Some 6,500 hectares have been disturbed by mining with only 1,500 hectares reclaimed by the end of 1998. Provincial legislation requires open pit mines to reclaim disturbed lands to a grass stage only. Therefore, in 1999 86,485 trees were planted to continue the establishment of mixed forest types for wildlife corridors. The Tree Canada Foundation and Eddie Bauer also supported this project.

This project was supported by our corporate partner, the Alcoa Foundation.
