North of the Florida Panhandle in Alabama's Covington County, the Conecuh National Forest planted 67,500 native longleaf and slash pine to help rebuild its upland sandhill ecosystem and improve the ecosystem for the many species of plants and animals associated with it. Many of these plants and animals are listed as threatened, endangered, or sensitive, including the gopher tortoise, Indiana gray bat and the Eastern indigo snake.
