Project Name: 2012 Arbor Day Celebration and Fair
Location: Providence, RI
Number of Trees: 50
The Rhode Island Memorial Veterans Cemetery (RIVC) was created between 1995 and 2005 by cutting down thousands of trees in a woodland. American Forests joined RIVC and the Rhode Island Tree Council (RITree) to plant 50 saplings along the cemetery’s main entrance road to reforest some of the trees that were eliminated in the original construction. This planting took place on April 28, 2012, during Rhode Island’s Arbor Day Celebration and Fair. In addition to the planting of pin oak, red oak, tuliptree and linden trees, this project featured plant clinics and planting care workshops by local green industry professionals. RIVC and RITree have been collaborating for years to help reforest the cemetery land. This planting increases much-needed shade, reduces wind intensity and creates a more tranquil environment for the tens of thousands of visitors to the cemetery every year.
