Independence Pass

Year Planted: 1991
Trees Planted: 4,000
Location: Colorado

The Independence Pass Foundation and Environmental Research Group planted 4,000 trees in 1991 to reclaim a steep embankment created when a road was widened in Independence Pass. Terraces were cut into the embankment and then volunteers planted a variety of small trees on the terraces. Additionally, grass was planted to hold the soil on the slope. This project will prevent further slope erosion and will improve water quality.

This project was supported by our corporate partner, the Alcoa Foundation.
