This project is located in Gunpowder Falls State Park on the Wintergreen Property. In the spring of 2001, 20 acres were machine planted with 15,000 sycamore, green ash and black walnut trees. In the past, this site was used for grazing horses. This project is part of a consolidation of previously farmed lands into contiguous blocks of forest land managed by the Maryland DNR and Park Service. The project will lead to the creation of bottomland forest along the Gunpowder Falls River and two first-order tributaries which eventually flow into the Chesapeake Bay. The implementation of this project will help restore a forested non-tidal wetland and provide terrestrial habitat benefits through the extension of existing blocks of contiguous forest. The project itself and its maintenance will be used for educational programs. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service was also involved in this project.
