Wicker Park is a 103 acre tract of land owned by the City of Pinehurst, currently home to the City Hall and Police Station. Plans are to keep 65 of the acres for a conservation area, complete with walking trails and educational opportunities. The rest of the park was reserved for future recreational needs, such as soccer fields and parking areas. 13 acres of the preserved area was planted with the formerly abundant, but now endangered, longleaf pine. It is hoped that this site will eventually provide habitat for red-cockaded woodpecker, assisted with the placement of artificial tree cavities. This is the first community park in Pinehurst and is very important to recreation, conservation and the preservation of open space.
This project was supported by our corporate partner, the Alcoa Foundation.
