Year Planted: 2009 Trees Planted: 69,000 Location: Texas
The Nature Conservancy's Roy E. Larsen Sandyland Sanctuary and the Big Thicket National Preserve are identified by American Bird Conservancy as Globally Important Birding Areas. The area is home to the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker, which nests in old longleaf pines. It is also home to the endangered Texas trailing phlox. The project will address the need for restoration and management of longleaf pine forests at the western extent of this system's historic range by planting 69,000 longleaf pines.
This project was supported by our corporate partner, the Alcoa Foundation.
