Year Planted: 1996 Trees Planted: 45,000 Location: Louisiana
On the Winn Ranger District of Kisatchie National Forest in Louisiana 45,000 longleaf pine were planted by American Forests, in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service and the Clifton-Choctaw Tribe, on 60 acres on two seperate tracts. One tract bordered the Saline Bayou National Wild and Scenic River and was cutover prior to Forest Service ownership. The other tract had been damaged by an arson caused wildfire. Both sites were traditionally longleaf pine areas, therefore this planting will increase the acreage of longleaf pine and will eventually provide vital habitat for the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker.
