American Forests Statement on President Obama’s
Plan to Fight Climate Change
Washington, D.C.; June 25, 2013 — American Forests is encouraged by the emphasis the president places on the important role forests play in mitigating carbon pollution, while also understanding the threats they are under due to the effects of climate change.
Increased catastrophic wildfires, unprecedented outbreak of pests and diseases, and extensive droughts all impact the health of our forests. By prioritizing and expanding forest restoration efforts to combat these threats, the president understands that healthy forests are part of the solution.
Currently, forests sequester nearly 12 percent of the total U.S. greenhouse emissions each year, and by restoring our forests and expanding our forest cover, forests will remain an important tool in combating climate change.
