Washington, D.C.; February 7, 2013 — American Forests CEO Scott Steen makes the following statement regarding President Obama’s nomination of Sally Jewell as secretary of the interior:

“We are encouraged by President Obama’s nomination of Sally Jewell as the secretary of the interior. She has demonstrated a strong commitment to conservation and recreation on public lands.

The Department of Interior (DOI) is an important agency in the protection and restoration of forested lands that exist in wilderness areas, wildlife refuges, conservation lands and national parks. With Ms. Jewell’s recent experience at REI, we feel that she will be a positive ally in fostering strong communities through sustainable recreation and other activities around local forests.

American Forests looks forward to working closely with the DOI and its team to protect forests across the country for the long term.”
