Every dollar of your membership plants another tree toward our goal of 100 million trees by 2020.
Planting trees in the right places for the right reasons is the best dollar-for-dollar investment you
can make to improve our environment. We plant to repair hurricane or flood damage - have cleaner air --
reclaim abandoned strip mines or farms - prevent erosion into salmon streams - fight back invasive species
of trees - and make cooler, cleaner cities. Trees reduce greenhouse gases by absorbing carbon dioxide, save
energy, help filter our water, and so much more!

Frequently Asked Questions
First, we've been around longer than anyone! We are the nation's oldest nonprofit citizens conservation
organization, founded in 1875. Second, we've got a track record that goes back far beyond the current
environmental era. We helped create the conservation movement in the United States. We helped create the
National Park and National Forest systems. We pioneered sustainable forestry and urban forestry. And today,
we are in the midst of one of the largest ecosystem restoration programs ever . . . to plant 20 million trees
for the new millennium.
Because of that 20 million tree effort, we are the biggest tree-planting conservation organization in the US.
We know that trees are an economical, long-term solution to many of our tough environmental problems, including
air pollution, water pollution, farm fertilizer runoff, climate change, urban heat islands, habitat restoration,
and more. And so while many groups are preserving ecosystems - we improve and recreate them through reforesting.
Also, AMERICAN FORESTS concentrates its efforts on the land where people live, work and relax.
AMERICAN FORESTS is one of the oldest and most respected conservation organizations in America. Since 1875,
we've been effective stewards of charitable donations and have leveraged them into effective conservation projects.
And we make you a promise . . . for every $1 you give, we'll plant a tree! We're a founding member of Earth Share,
the umbrella group for environmental workplace giving. We keep our expenses within the guidelines for non-profits,
so we can get as many trees in the ground as possible.
