Guidelines for Nominating a Tree
American Forests will recognize historic trees in the fall of 2009 within the following five categories:
Historic Tree
A tree associated with a historic or cultural event Ex. Antietam SycamoreFamous People
A tree associated with an artist, cultural icon, or historical figure Ex. Martin Luther King Live OakHistoric Places and Famous Attractions
A tree associated with a historic location, institution, park, or festival Ex. Cherry Blossom FestivalAge
A tree that is remarkably old Ex. Angel Live OakUnique
A tree that has survived difficult situations, is an unusual shape, or is living outside its normal range Ex. Oklahoma Survivor Tree
To nominate a Historic or Personal Tree, you must create a user account.
This allows you to nominate new trees, manage your nominations, upload additional supporting documents, and submit your nomination. Because of this option, we strongly encourage di versity in the types of references used.
All Historic Tree nominations must provide documentation to verify the historical accuracy of the tree.
If a tree has been referenced in several documents, please provide all sources of documentation, including current and old photographs. We strongly encourage diversity in the types of references used. (e.g. newspapers, magazines, textbooks, etc).
You will be allowed to upload a maximum of 30 documents to support the validity of the nominated Historic Tree.
When uploading documents, be sure you have the appropriate full name of publications, authors, and dates of reference materials used as citation.
If there is no evidence a tree is associated with a famous or historic event, your nomination will automatically be considered a “Personal tree.”
These are trees that do not qualify for the official Register, but is a separate category that lists trees with significant meaning to an individual, providing a forum for anyone t o share personal stories about their special tree.
Please remember to save all information entered when completing the nomination form.
With your user account, you will be allowed to manage, edit, and view tree information before submitting the nomination form for review. You will also be able to log-in and upload up to 30 supporting documents.
Only “submit” your nomination once you have completed the form and uploaded all the supporting documents.
You will receive a confirmation message from American Forests stating that we have received all of your material and your nomination is under review.
Once your nomination is reviewed by American Forests, the tree will be published to either the Historic Tree or the Personal Tree Register.>
You will get an email notification of the status of your nominated tree. You can also view the status by logging into your Historic Tree account.
