What is America’s Historic Tree Register?
You may nominate a tree via the Register’s website at – http://www.americanforests.org/htr
While this is an online publication, we understand that not everyone has access to the internet. To request a paper nomination, please contact
historictrees@amfor.org or (202) 737-1944.
How do you determine which trees will be published for the Register?
Historic trees will be approved based on the supporting documents provided with each nomination. We must ensure the validity of historic events, places, and people through reference materials that are submitted by the nominator. Nominations have a higher chance of being approved for publication if there is a higher number and greater diversity of supporting documents. Approval of historic trees is up to the discretion of the Administrators of the Historic Tree program. If the nominated tree is determined to not be a Historic Tree it will be placed in the Personal Tree category.
Personal trees are a forum to share stories about your favorite trees. These trees will be approved given the content shared is appropriate for all audiences.
When will I know if my tree has been approved?
You will receive an email notification regarding the final status of your tree. The first America’s Historic Tree Register will be published in the fall of 2009. After the initial publication tree approval will be on a rolling basis.
Can I nominate multiple trees?
Yes, you may nominate multiple trees. If there are a grove of trees that are significant in history, you may nominate them as one collective group. You may also nominate several trees as individual nominations.
What type of reference materials can I use for documentation?
You may use several material types as supporting documentation - photographs, newspapers, magazines, book references, historical markers, websites, etc. We ask that you provide citation for all supporting documents (e.g. name of article, date of publication, author of website).
